About Peller Estates

Peller Estates started in 1925 when Andrew Peller arrived in Canada from Hungary. Andrew Peller was a successful businessman in Hungary but came to Canada to pursue his dream of producing high-quality wine for people all over the world to enjoy. He loved how Europeans appreciated, longed and loved to share their wines and wanted to bring that same feeling to Canada.

He researched for years before finally deciding to plant his first vineyard in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. Soon after its opening, he planted another more modest vineyard nearby as well. After years of success, Andrew Peller had his eyes and heart set on the East. In 1969, he purchased a winery and winemaking license in Ontario, and the rest is history.

For over 50 years, Peller Estates has carried the tradition of crafting wine with an uncommon commitment to quality. Year after year, the winery is rewarded for their painstaking efforts to create some of the best wines in the north. They even won Canadian Winery of the Year at London’s International Wine & Spirit Competition.

With the New Year on the horizon, it’s time to start planning a 2019 trip to Niagara Falls. But when is the best time to go? We break down what to expect from a Niagara Falls summer, Niagara Falls winter and everything in-between. Read on for things to do in Niagara Falls Canada all year-long, from a visit to Niagara wineries, to checking out Niagara Falls botanical gardens.

Niagara Falls Spring

Spring is paradise in Niagara Falls, when the area experiences a plethora of bright colours via gorgeous flowers that emerge throughout the area. Niagara Falls botanical gardens and attractions like the Centennial Lilac Garden are stunning in spring, and there are plenty of places to wander to find beautiful spring flora.

You can find yellow daffodils at the Queen Victoria Park, with so many of these flowers that Niagara Falls has earned the nickname of the “Daffodil Capital of North America.” There’s also a Floral Showhouse that has thousands of springtime flowers up for viewing, and a Floral Clock that is constructed with fresh flowers.

Niagara Falls in spring also welcomes Springlicious, an annual event with a free outdoor music festival, artisan fair, street food and family activities. The event happens toward the end of spring. There’s also the Niagara Falls Elvis Festival, happening April 26-28, 2019, with Elvis competitions, shows and food.

Temperatures range from highs around 42°F to 76°F from March through June, dipping down to lows of 24°F to 56°F. You might catch a bit of snow from March to April, but then temperatures start to warm up as summer approaches.

Niagara Falls Summer

Niagara Falls summer is the peak tourist season for Niagara Falls. Temperatures are ideal, averaging around the low 70s to low 80s for a high and dipping down to the high 50s for a low average temperature. Be prepared for humidity, but you can always cool off on the Hornblower Niagara Cruises ride.

Lots of summer sunshine means brilliant Niagara Falls views complemented by blue skies and rainbows. You can also find plenty of roadside fruit and vegetable stands along the lower Niagara Parkway, where you can also hunker down for a picnic.

There are summer events every day in Niagara Falls, but two to plan for are Canada Day and Fourth of July. On Canada Day July 1, there’s a parade, live music, entertainment and fireworks.  America’s Independence Day is also celebrated on the Canada side of Niagara Falls, with fireworks and a special red, white and blue Niagara Falls illumination show.

Niagara Falls Autumn

If you’re a wine fan, autumn in Niagara Falls may be the best time to visit. Niagara wineries are in harvest season in fall, so you can sample some of the best wines the wineries have to offer. The 67^th Niagara Grape & Wine Festival takes place from September 14-29, 2019, featuring wine park events, a wine parade and special discovery passes that provide unique wine experiences throughout the Niagara Falls wine region.

Is beer more your drink of choice? Niagara Falls hosts Oktoberfest every year, too. Entry is free, and the event includes German foods and beer, plus live entertainment from German musicians and dancers.

The Canadian Thanksgiving takes place in early October, but you can also celebrate Halloween October 31 in Niagara Falls, or partake in American Thanksgiving over on the Niagara Falls Canada side.

Niagara Falls foliage embraces fall, with tree leaves changing colours to reds, oranges and yellows before winter is ushered in. Be prepared for fall temperature highs ranging from the mid-40s to low 70s and lows from the low 30s to low 50s. You might even see snow in October, too.

Niagara Falls Winter

Winter in Niagara Falls is breathtaking, as sheets of ice and plenty of mist give the illusion that Niagara Falls has frozen over. It really hasn’t, but the spectacle is still worth seeing. Just be aware that certain attractions, like boat tours, might be closed due to weather.

Expect snow throughout winter, and temperatures dip down to highs of low 30s to high 40s, and lows of teens to low 20s. Bundle up for events like the Niagara Icewine Festival, which takes place from January 11-27, 2019. Sample varietals of this unique wine, made from grapes that have frozen on the vine.

1. Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights

When: Through January 31, 2019

What: Billing itself as “the longest festival in the world,” the Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights was founded in 1982 and has been going strong every year since. More than 3 million tree lights and more than 120 animated displays transform the 8km-long route along Niagara Parks, Dufferin Islands and the surrounding tourist areas. Visitors can drive or bike or walk throughout the route, which lights up landmarks throughout the area and features special event-only displays.

This year, visitors can see the Zimmerman Fountain covered in light, view more than a dozen 3D Canadian wildlife displays, see the world’s largest Canadian-American flag that alternates displays, and check out more than 50 trees covered in lights accompanied by music.

The Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights is free to attend. There are also special events scheduled in the area throughout the holiday season.

2. Winter Fireworks Displays

When: Through January 25, 2019

What: If you love seeing Niagara Falls during the day, viewing it at night as it’s surrounded by a dazzling fireworks show is an amazing experience. There are winter fireworks displays nearly every night in Niagara Falls, with each show lasting around 5 minutes long. It’s fun for the whole family!

In 2018, visitors can see the free fireworks show on Friday nights throughout December at 9 p.m., as well as nightly from December 22 to December 31 at 9 p.m. On New Year’s Eve, there’s another fireworks show when the clock strikes midnight.

Be aware that fireworks shows are weather-dependent, so inclement weather may result in a show being canceled. Snag a great viewing spot behind Table Rock Visitors Centre, in Queen Victoria Park, at the Grand View Marketplace or on the platform of the Journey Behind the Falls.

3. The Ultimate Christmas Village

When: Through January 2, 2019

What: The Heritage District of Niagara Falls in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, has dubbed itself as the “Ultimate Christmas Village,” a destination to check out if you’re in the area during the holiday season. Winter Festival of Lights

The Winter Festival of Lights is one of the most amazing events of the season. During the winter, the whole Ontario area lights up with the magic of the holiday season. There’s a 4-D Motion Theatre that plays shows with lifelike action. New Year’s Eve Comedy Extravaganza

Deck the Falls Holiday Walking Tours

If you’re looking to experience all of the magic and wonder of the season, the Deck the Falls Holiday Walking Tours will take you on a festive winter journey. Journey Behind the Falls

Burton Cummings

Legendary Canadian musician Burton Cummings has a long and celebrated music career as the lead-singer and songwriter of The Guess Who and a solo artist with hits like “Stand Tall” and “My Own Way to Rock”. In 2016 he was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

The Sheepdogs

The Sheepdogs are a multi Juno Award-winning retro rock band from Saskatchewan with six studio albums and many popular songs including “I Don’t Know”, “Feeling Good”, and “The Way It Is”.

Walk Off the Earth

Burlington-based Walk Off the Earth is an indie pop band known for their music videos of covers and original songs, one of which features all five members of the band simultaneously playing one guitar. Walk Off the Earth won the 2016 Juno Award for Group of the Year and has released a string of successful original songs.

Avenue Inn

Avenue Inn is a Niagara Falls-based alternative rock band that won Band of the Year at the Niagara Music Awards and has released a brand new album called “Tonight”.

This November, countries from all over the world will head to Niagara Falls to compete in the Cascades of Fire International Fireworks Competition as part of Niagara’s annual Winter Festival of Lights celebration. The competition will feature 18-minute pyrotechnic shows presented by each country and spectacularly light up the skies over Niagara Falls.

October 20^th, Old Fort Erie

On October 21^st, 27^th, and 28^th you can embark on a spooky All Hallows’ Eve ghost tour at Old Fort Erie and experience Halloween traditions, 1812-style on this historic battlefield. It will be a fun and frightening evening that ends with refreshments and the annual burning of a Guy Fawkes effigy. Tours are available at 7:30pm. 7:45pm, and 8:00pm.
