Viewing Safety

Looking at the sun during an eclipse without specialized viewing glasses can cause serious eye damage including partial or even complete loss of vision. Designated viewing glasses are ISO 12312-2 (international standard).

Similarly, if you plan on photographing the eclipse make sure your camera has a special-purpose solar filter to avoid damaging the camera sensor during the partial phases.  Do NOT look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury.
