The Crowne Plaza, Niagara’s Historic Hotel
The reputation of the Crowne Plaza has always preceded it. Even before opening on July 1, 1929 the Brock’s legacy had been cemented in Niagara Falls history.
Originally named the Hotel General Brock, planning began in 1927 with construction taking just over half a year to complete. At the time, establishing a record for this particular type of construction. Built at a cost of $1.5 million dollars the Crowne Plaza boasted 260 guestrooms, and featured a roof garden, fireproof construction and a large Grand ballroom. The local press called it “a mammoth edifice, gleaming white in the sunlight, classic in appearance, looming over the Niagara River”
In later years, renovations to the Fallsview Rainbow Dining room gave an opportunity to add two floors that were constructed and dedicated in 1948.
Most recently, the hotel has undergone renovations and upgrades to ensure that the Crowne Plaza Hotel remains one of the premier hotels in Niagara Falls.
What’s in a Name
The Hotel was named in honour of Major General Sir Isaac Brock, one of Canada’s greatest heroes. General Brock was the military commander of the British and Canadian forces during the early months of the war of 1812. Brock was killed during an intense battle while defending a prominent point of land, which would later become the site of a monument also named in his honour. Queenston Heights, is today a large park offering recreational facilities and home to Brock’s Monument a 190 foot tower that features a statue of the General at the top.
Stars shine on the Crowne
As Niagara’s first luxury hotel it has long been a favourite of Hollywood elite and royalty. Since it’s opening the Crowne Plaza has played host to notable guests throughout history including Walt Disney, Shirley Temple, Jimmy Stewart, Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth, and perhaps most famously Marilyn Monroe while filming the movie “Niagara”. In recent years the Crowne Plaza has been graced with appearances from Sylvester Stallone, Matt Dillon, Bruce Willis, Jackie Chan, and has even appeared on film. The ending to “A whole nine yards” starring Matthew Perry was filmed on the balcony terrace on the 11th floor.
With it’s rich history, and continued elegance the 4- star Crowne Plaza hotel continues to be a source of pride, a jewel amongst modern skyscrapers.
