Majestic Monarchs

September 9 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Dive into the mysterious world of beautiful monarch butterflies with our annual Majestic Monarchs, tag and release program! Monarchs are iconic orange, black and white butterflies classified as a “species of special concern” under Ontario’s Endangered Species Act.

Join us for this free event at the Butterfly Conservatory and discover the fascinating life cycle and incredible migratory journey of the monarch butterfly. Learn how you can help with conservation efforts and take part in monarch tagging demonstrations and releases as the monarchs begin their incredible journey south.

At the end of the summer, a special generation of monarch butterflies is born that will travel across North America to California and Mexico for the winter. Tag, release and monitor your own butterfly as part of your Majestic Monarch experience!

The tags allow researchers to effectively track monarch migration patterns and document changes and trends in their behaviour. Tags are recorded and posted online, giving you the chance to potentially see where your tagged butterfly ended its journey!
